The Transcendental Club–First Meeting March 8th

Please join us for a discussion of some of the ideas of self-culture, individualism and nature as

a source of spiritual experience that have shaped the Unitarian faith since the early 19th

century in America. Starting with an exploration of Emerson through the Skinner House book,

Emerson as a Spiritual Guide by Barry M. Andrews (available at uuabookstore.org or

amazon.com), further meetings can explore the visions of Thoreau, Channing and other

individuals inspired by the Transcendentalist spirit.

In the first meeting we will discuss Emerson’s essays The Divinity School Address, Self-

Reliance and The Over-Soul, as well as explore some of the questions in the Andrews book

(through page 73). If possible, come with highlighted passages you would like to discuss from

the Andrews book and/ or seek out the original essays in the many inexpensive volumes available of Emerson’s work. If interested, let Ellyn at office@wuu.org know you will be

coming. Light refreshments will be served

Childcare available upon request, one week’s notice required.
