The poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote of the practice of in-seeing: how his writing, at best, allowed him to see another being in its fullness, simple and good and real. One of the gifts that artists give us in their work is we get to see the world through their eyes. More than simple representation, art can allow us to see more deeply, more honestly. It can resist our tendency to see everything in one dimension, and it has the capacity to invite us into deeper levels of consciousness that lead us toward the sacred.
