FAQ

How do I get to WUU?
The WUU campus is at 3051 Ironbound Road (between John Tyler Hwy & Jamestown Road). Watch for an obelisk sign at the road as you approach. For a detailed map & directions, click on location.

I’m a visitor–where should I go?
Welcome! If you’re visiting in person, please look for the Welcome Center in our Gathering Hall, where the Newcomers Team will greet you and give you a name tag, if you want one. Find more information about our programs to welcome you in the Visit section.

What’s the worship service like?
Our services draw from many traditions and sources. Worship services include stories, scripture, poetry, proverbs, and other readings that reflect the rich heritage of human spirituality. Music from the choir and other talented congregation & community musicians form an important part of our service.

While our service may vary from week to week, there are some common elements. There is a welcome and greeting. Lighting the chalice (the symbol of Unitarian Universalism) is followed by singing of a hymn. A story for all ages follows.

We share joys, sorrows, and concerns of the congregation. There are readings, a time of meditation and a musical selection, followed by the sermon, another hymn, and the offering collection. We close by extinguishing the chalice and then stand (in body or spirit) and join hands as closing words are offered. Learn more in our Worship section.

If I join a service online, do I have to attend on camera?
No, but you are welcome to do so! Join us on Sunday mornings via Zoom with or without a camera, via telephone, or watch a livestream on YouTube.

Should I bring my children?
Bring your children! WUU also offers age-appropriate religious education programs for children and youth, led by members of our congregation and guided by our Director of Religious Education after Sunday services.

What do “UUs” believe?
Unitarian Universalism is a theologically diverse religion that encourages seekers to follow their own spiritual paths. There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote. WUU has a covenant that embodies these principles. Mission and vision statements guide us.

With what denomination is WUU affiliated?
We are part of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), headquartered in Boston, MA. The UUA was formed in 1961 through the consolidation of two faith traditions, the Universalist Church of America, organized in 1793, and the American Unitarian Association, organized in 1825. Today the UUA is a religious family of more than 1,000 congregations that support each other and bring to the world a theology of acceptance, interdependence and compassion.
