3/19/20 – WUU Coronavirus Update & Introducing the WUU Caring Ministry (excerpt from March 19, 2020 Spiral)

We begin this issue of the WUU Spiral with an update from our WUU Medical Response Team and an invitation to connect with our pastoral care team.
WUU Coronavirus Update
  • Four WUUs are hospitalized with the Coronavirus.
    • Don Ackley, Nan Hart, Fred Gilbertson are in Sentara Williamsburg Hospital in stable condition.
    • Larry Ventis is at Riverside Doctor’s Hospital in stable condition.
  • In addition to the four above, five other WUUs have symptoms of the virus severe enough to be tested and are self-isolating at home. They are awaiting results of the test.
  • If you attended any gatherings of WUUs beginning from February 23rd until now, you might have been exposed. But because the incubation period of the virus is 2 – 7 days, and you do not have symptoms now, it is unlikely you will get Covid 19 from WUU exposure.
  • WUU formed a WUU Medical Response Team with our congregational medical professionals who have volunteered their time and expertise. They have reached out to the congregation where possible and will continue to act in an advisory capacity going forward.

Introducing the WUU Caring Ministry

by David Hopkinson

The WUU Caring Ministry is headed by Rev. Laura and works under her direction to expand the reach of pastoral care beyond the matters that only the minister can offer. Laura can be reached by phone at the WUU office (757-220-6830) or on her cell (703-282-8060).  There are two main branches under Laura which have been in place for the past several years. We are recently augmented by a third group: (1) The Caring Team (CT), (2) The Lay Pastoral Care Associates (LPCA), and now (3) The WUU COVID -19 Medical Team.

All three groups are staffed and trained to provide support, information and appropriate assistance to the WUU membership. For now most services would have to be offered in a “no-direct-physical-contact” manner, consistent with social distancing guidelines.

CT is led by Carolyn Greathouse (ph: 757-503-0311; email: carolyn608@gmail.com) & Trenna Tankersley (ph: 757-565-7909; text: 757-903-8367; email: trennatankersley@gmail.com).  Each is available for chats and for small service requests, which now include help in getting grocery home-deliveries.

LPCA is co-led by David Hopkinson (ph: 757-879-7526; email davidhopkinson@gmail.com) & Jane Reilly (ph: 757-903-9343; email: janereilly@cox.net).  Each are available for chats or talk responses to more serious personal concerns like anxiety, loneliness, or relational tensions.  There are six other trained associates including RNs, mental health professionals and teachers who could be matched & assigned to help a caller out.

The COVID-19 Team is led by Drs. Camilla Buchanan and Chris Llewellyn.  The Team can be reached by text at 757-784-2702. NOT FOR DIAGNOSIS OR TREATMENT but answers to general medical questions about the virus.  Referrals for testing and to direct care are offered. A quick-screening telephone-prompted program is in preparation. Guidance about pandemic self-care & health management during crisis will be sent via WUU group emails and Breeze.

No WUU needs to be feel alone or unsupported as we face this national and local emergency.  We may not be gathering or meeting face-to-face much in the near future, but we are all in this together.  We will have to depend on each other. So reach out as you see fit. WUU response teams are ready.
