Lighting the Chalice
Susan Walkley

We light this chalice
for the warmth of love;
for the light of truth;
for the energy of action;
and for the harmony of peace:
Peace in our hearts,
peace in our community,
and peace in our world.

Each month we Share the Plate with one of the local organizations that provides a much needed service to our community. It offers us an opportunity to extend our compassion to others in need. This week, your contributions will go to Hampton Roads Refugee Relief (HR3), whose mission is to promote self-sufficiency and wellness of refugees resettling in Hampton Roads. The organization provides refugees with additional education, links them with employers, assists with housing and transportation, familiarizes them with available social services, assists with medical care and more. These activities ease the transition to the United States and make sure refugees have every opportunity to succeed and become productive members of our community. While they do serve refugee families and individuals from all origins, faiths, and backgrounds, the vast majority of their current service users are Afghani and the need for additional services has increased exponentially over the last several weeks. Thank you in advance for your much-needed generosity.

Extinguishing the Chalice
Susan Walkley

We extinguish this flame,
but not the light of truth,
the warmth of community,
or the fire of commitment.
These we carry in our hearts
until we are together again.
