We are proud of our sanctuary building and eight-acre campus. From rented space in the local library to an elementary school to the Home ’95 campaign that brought us to our original sanctuary building, the WUU congregation has remained committed to providing space for its mission and for use by the wider community.
The renowned architect Carlton Abbott designed an airy, light-filled original sanctuary space that is practical, flexible, and expandable. Its vaulted ceilings and soaring windows impress and inspire. At other times, this same space serves as a gathering for socials, weddings, potlucks, meetings, choir rehearsals, receptions, memorial services, community events, yoga classes, coffee houses, concerts, and more.
The commercially-certified kitchen serves as a hub for many hospitality functions. A large audio-visual room at the back of the sanctuary enhances worship services, including projections, recording and live streaming. The fellowship hall entrance and adjacent outside covered patio can accommodate a wide variety of events.
Fahs House and Parker House provide special partnerships with community organizations whose missions fit with WUU’s vision. Fahs is the home of the Williamsburg Friends Society.
The first phase of a three-phase expansion plan was completed in late 2016 with a major renovation of our main building.
In 2012, our strategic plan stated that by 2017, WUU would have the facilities to fulfill its mission more effectively.
As a result of a major capital campaign and Phase I construction, we have:
- a 7,000 square-foot wing added to the original sanctuary building for Religious Education, nursery care, meetings, office spaces, plus workroom & conference rooms
- an expanded Gathering Hall
- a beautiful Little Sanctuary for meditation, intimate gatherings has added to the flexibility of our space
- handicap-accessible restrooms, storage, family restroom & showers
- an integrated campus look with new landscaping
- commercially-certified kitchen
- new HVAC systems
- improved lighting inside and out
