Dear WUU Community,
Today we learned that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Even though the decision didn’t come as a surprise, still, I am shaken and angry, and I am deeply concerned for everyone who will be harmed by this gutting of the basic human right not to be forced to bear a child.
If you are too, I hope you will do whatever you need to take care of yourself today. And, I invite you to join in community to witness for your values.
Tonight, I plan to participate in a “Bans off Our Bodies” witness event, 6-7 p.m. at the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse, 5201 Monticello Avenue. Please join me if you are moved and able.
The Unitarian Universalist Association’s Side with Love public advocacy campaign has already released a statement with ideas for taking action. I encourage you to check it out.
Then, on Sunday morning, our social justice leaders and I invite you to join us for a conversation right after the worship service, in-person and online. We’ll hold space for you to share how you’re doing, and invite your ideas about how WUU can witness to our values in this moment. Please join us.
And, again, please take care of yourself. This news will take time to absorb. Our faithful response will be needed not just right this moment, but over the long haul. There will be roles for everyone to play. So please honor your own inner knowing in this moment about what next steps will be right for you today, and tomorrow, and into the future that we will continue to shape together. I love you, and I’ll see you soon.
In faith,
Rev. Laura
