Notes from the Minister

Dear WUU Community,

We’re almost there. So many of you have been working so hard to tip the scales in this election toward our Unitarian Universalist values of justice, compassion, and respect for all beings. Whatever comes next—and I’m hopeful—we will keep on bringing those values into the world.

And whatever comes next, there will be a need for healing, after all that we’ve been through. I want to let you know about three immediate opportunities for spiritual support around the election, should you need it (you’ll find the details in our weekly Spiral email too):

Tuesday, Nov. 3, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Spiritual Grounding for Election Day

Dozens of my UU ministerial colleagues from around the country will be gathering online to offer a space for respite, positive energy, peace and spiritual practice on Election Day. You’re welcome to join at any time during that day to find a peaceful space for reflection, prayer, meditation and spiritual practice. Different UU ministers will be leading every 15 minutes.

Wednesday, Nov. 4, 6-8 p.m. WUU drop-in support

No matter what Election Day brings, you’re welcome to stop by a WUU Zoom gathering space on Wednesday evening, for anyone who wants to come and check in about how you’re doing. Drop in any time 6-8 p.m. Trained caring volunteers and I will be on hand to listen and offer support.

Thursday, Nov. 5, 8-9:15 p.m. Post-Election Vigil & Community Gathering

Our national UU the Vote team invites you to a Post-Election Vigil & Community Gathering. No matter the results of the election this year, we know we will want to gather in community. Please save the date and join the UUA, UU the Vote, Side with Love, and UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray for this event. Hosted on Zoom, Facebook Live, and YouTube. We’ll share the links to join in next week’s Spiral email.

And whatever happens next week, the urgent need for racial justice will continue. Here at WUU, our Program Council has taken on the important work of reviewing and implementing the recommendations in a major new anti-oppression report from our UUA: Widening the Circle of Concern. A subgroup of the Program Council has begun to study the report, and we’ll be working with all our ministry teams to make concrete changes in support of diversity and racial justice in our congregation. We still have work to do and I’m deeply grateful to be on this journey with you.

Take care and blessings to you all,

Rev. Laura
