WUU acts on the UU first and second principles (upholding the worth and dignity of all people and justice, equity, and compassion in human relations) by collaborating with community partners who are working to create the beloved community where we live.
WUU is a member of Greater Williamsburg Outreach Mission, a faith based organization that creates programs to assist our homeless neighbors and partners with community service providers who need volunteers and/or funding assistance. Our WUU Motel Meal team delivers 80 meals once a month to families living in motels, and our Crockpot team delivers shelf stable groceries and recipes for crockpot meals to motel families monthly. Our WUU Summer Meals for Kids team makes and delivers 200 bag lunches all summer to children living in motels and low-income housing developments.
WUU is a host for the Community of Faith Emergency Winter Shelter. Each year we re-purpose our church building for one week to provide hospitality and shelter to people who would be unsheltered without the COFM shelter. Our volunteers prepare and serve hot, nutritious dinners and breakfasts, offer conversation and entertainment, and provide security overnight.
WUU is a member of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, a faith-based non-partisan organization that advocates for fair, just, equitable laws in Virginia. VICPP provides information all year and invites our WUU members to the annual Day for All People to lobby our legislators to pass progressive laws, such as increase in the minimum wage and lowering payday lending interest rates.
During the pandemic, WUU has hosted food drives, provided funding to organizations providing emergency food and housing assistance, distributed food, and advertised volunteer opportunities to those who feel comfortable safely volunteering in a variety of ways.
