“Reimagining Justice”

WUU Social Justice Team, Guest Worship Leaders

The criminal legal system is in many ways the modern continuation of slavery in America. It is purposely designed not with a focus on community safety but on punitive measures that disproportionately affect Black and brown people and the poor. How can we reimagine a system focused on restoration and rehabilitation? What role can we play in creating this change?

“Entitled to Their Freedom”

Nicole Brown, Guest Worship Leader

Nicole Brown is Colonial Williamsburg’s Program Manager and an actor portraying Ann Wager, teacher at the Bray School from 1760-1774. The Bray School, the first official school for African American children in Virginia, is currently being restored through a collaboration among The College of William & Mary and Colonial Williamsburg. Brown is continuing her research on Ann Wager, the Bray School, and its students this fall as a PhD candidate at W&M. The complex and contradictory relationship between religion, slavery, and education at the Bray School is a catalyst by which individuals of faith can support our communal search for truth.
