“Listening, A Way to Courageously Care for Each Other”

Rev. Janna Roche, Worship Leader

One of the promises we make in our covenant as WUUs is to care for each other. In some languages the root word for courage and the root word for heart are the same. One way to heartfully give care is to intently listen and bear witness to the conversation of another. Why don’t we do this more often? How can we be better at it? And, why should we even bother?

Before moving to Williamsburg in 1998, Janna Roche was Chaplain at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York and spiritual care coordinator at the Utica Hospice. After moving to Williamsburg, Janna served both the Hospice House and Patriots Colony Retirement Community as chaplain until she semi-retired in 2014, after which she served seven years as a part-time Community Outreach Coordinator for Bucktrout Funeral Services. In 2020 she received her certification as an End-of-Life Doula. Janna received her MDiv from Colgate Rochester Divinity School as an ordained minister in the UCC, is a certified celebrant, and has a Death & Grief Studies Certificate. In 2018 she published a book, Visiting Hours Are Over – A Chaplain Discovers What Really Matters from Her Parents’ Deaths.
