“Love’s Confusing Joy – How Love and Gratitude Expand the Heart and Make Us Bigger (Inside)”

Steve DeLaney, Guest Worship Leader

One of the discoveries of a life of spiritual practice is that the quality of attention we bring to the world also impacts who we are. When I see the world through the eyes of love, there is more of me, I am larger, deeper, more real. Join Steve DeLaney as we explore through poems, stories, and songs this way of seeing the world through the eyes of gratitude and love.

Steve DeLaney has worked in ministry with young people for over 20 years – in outdoor education, jail ministry, urban service, parish ministry, and as a high school teacher and campus minister. He has a MA in Theology and an MFA in Creative Writing. His passions include literature and writing, hiking, and gardening. He lives with his wife, Allison, and their three kids (and their dog Peach!) in Williamsburg, VA. You can find him on his blog: somedelaney.wordpress.com.

“Buddhism and Change”

John Chowning, Guest Worship Leader

Understanding change teaches us to embrace our experiences without clinging to them. It’s like giving someone a hug. We can get the most out of the present moment by fully appreciating the intensity of our experiences, knowing we will soon let them go to embrace whatever comes next. Buddhist teachings can help us appreciate each moment.

John Chowning moved full-time to Williamsburg in 2015 and began attending the Monday night meditation group held here at WUU. Because of his love for Buddhist teachings and his past experience as a teacher, it wasn’t long before he became one of the lay teachers and in the following years, he became a member of the Williamsburg Buddhist Sangha Board of Directors, which he now leads. After meeting a number of WUU members, John and his wife Barbara began attending services here, and became members in March 2018.
