WUUs Hug a Maple Tree, Explore Environmentalism

by Austen Petersen, Director of Religious Education

The high school and middle school groups went to Savanah’s farm one Sunday in April. We learned from each other, from Savanah, the steward of the land, and from a maple tree. It took seven WUUs holding hands to gather around the trunk of this old resplendent maple, pictured below.

Savanah shared with us her vision of a community living on her land, sharing resources and working the land together.

This is what the teens had to say about the day:

  • “Savanah talked to us about how sacred the land is. She explained the rich history of the property and showed us all the exciting projects she has planned.”
  • Kanen said, “It was a great time together. I loved the farming community and feel like farming is a practice that has been somewhat lost and is so important. Food truly is important for everybody and the environment as well. Savanah is such a friendly person.”

We explored soil science and talked about ways to test and measure soil.

We ended our afternoon with a picnic lunch in the sunshine. Thank you to everyone who participated and to Savanah for hosting.
