Small Groups & Programs

One of the best ways to get to know other people here at WUU is to join one of our small groups. It’s a great way to connect deeply with others and to grow on your own personal and spiritual journey. There are a number of different types of groups, and a sampling is featured below.

Interested in joining a group or learning more about the WUU community? Complete our online new visitor form to let us know more about your interests and get connected.

  • Choir

Not only does the choir sing, but they are also a strong small community that connects with and supports one another. They are a big small group! Singers of all abilities are welcome, and you do not need to know how to read music. It is a group where truly all are welcome and the only requirement is to want to make joyful music together. The choir meets Wednesday evenings at 7pm from September through May and shares a piece during worship services approximately twice a month. Email music@wuu.org to learn more.

  • Soul Matters

These small groups meet monthly to engage with the monthly Soul Matters theme and get to know one another on a deeper level. They involve intentional listening, spiritual practices, and a group covenant for being together. Most new groups start in the fall, but there are ways to connect throughout the year. Contact soulmatters@wuu.org for more information.

  • Senior Companions

Every month, seniors (however defined!) gather to discuss topics of mutual interest. Open to all with no registration necessary. Senior Companions meets in the gathering area on the second Monday of the month from 10 am to noon.

  • Qigong

For an embodied spiritual practice, try our regular Qigong classes. Qigong (CHEE-GONG) is an ancient Chinese health practice that seeks to integrate mind, body, breath, and spirit. It can be thought of as meditation in motion. Although it looks very much like Tai Chi, the movements are simpler and much easier to learn. The Qigong group meets most Tuesdays from 1-1:45 pm. There is no cost to attend. Contact qigong@wuu.org for more details and the exact schedule.

  • Meditation Groups

Many WUUs attend the Monday evening meditation group offered at 7 pm at WUU by the Williamsburg Buddhist Sangha as well as attend retreat events on the WUU campus. The Sangha also hosts a regular Wednesday evening meditation group at William & Mary and other offerings as well. See their website for more information.

  • A Course in Miracles

This group and movement are based on a 1976 book of the same name, and the underlying premise is that the greatest "miracle" is the act of simply gaining a full "awareness of love's presence" in a person's life. The group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 10 am in WUU’s Little Sanctuary. No registration is necessary to attend.

  • Walking Groups

WUU has hosted different walking groups over the years. During the pandemic many people met for walks at Freedom Park. Currently people join the Saturday 8:30 am Buddhist walking group close to WUU at Clara Byrd Baker. See the Sangha website for more information.

  • Book Clubs

While books are often discussed in relationship to Soul Matters topics, WUU also has a history of gatherings to discuss specific books such as the UUA Common Read or other books of interest to individuals and the community. The next planned book and meeting will be announced soon.

  • Socializers Group

WUU hosts a Socializers Facebook group where members exchange information about local events such as music or craft festivals. Sometimes people give away last minute theater tickets or make plans to attend a local performance together.
