Journey to Asylum
The Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists are proud to join many other UU congregations around the country in supporting migrants as part of the Unitarian Universalists Service Committee’s Congregational Accompaniment Program for Asylum Seekers.
The challenges facing migrants seeking asylum in the United States are overwhelming. No one should ever have to face the dehumanizing treatment, barriers to entry, and prohibitive legal hurdles deliberately designed to deny them safe haven in this country.
As people of faith, we are called to respond to this injustice, promote the inherent worth and dignity of all people, and serve the most vulnerable populations in ways that make a difference in their lives. Although we know that we cannot solve the Central American migration crisis alone, the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists’ Journey to Asylum program seeks to offer compassion and solidarity to migrants and their families. We sponsor, house, financially support, and accompany them through the process of obtaining legal asylum. For many migrants, such sponsorship can mean the difference between pursuing asylum from a place of safety and freedom and going through the entire court proceedings from a detention center.
As part of this program, we will walk shoulder to shoulder with migrants throughout the entire asylum process—from the time we transport them to Williamsburg until they are legally granted asylum and achieve self-sufficiency.
If there was ever a time to provide safe haven to migrants, that time is now. If there was ever a community so uniquely situated to walk with our neighbors on their journey to asylum, WUU is that community. We invite you to join us on our journey to achieve justice for our migrant sisters and brothers.
