December Interim Minister’s Column: Presence

As December unfolds, we are called to reflect on the theme of presence. The holiday season can be a time of great joy, filled with celebrations, family gatherings, and traditions that warm our hearts. But it can also be a time of stress, of unmet expectations, and for some, a deep sense of loneliness or sadness. Amidst the busyness and the emotions that this season brings, the practice of being truly present becomes both a gift and a challenge.

In our own lives, presence means allowing ourselves to be fully in the moment—whether that moment is one of joy, of reflection, or of struggle. It’s about giving ourselves permission to experience the full range of our emotions without rushing past them or numbing them. What might it look like to be present to your own needs and to honor them during this season, even when it means saying no to one more event or taking time for quiet amidst the hustle?

For those we care about, presence is one of the most meaningful gifts we can offer. It’s about showing up not just physically, but with our whole selves—listening deeply, offering our attention, and being attuned to the needs and feelings of those around us. In a season often marked by material giving, let us not forget the power of simply being there for one another, in all the ways that matter most.

As a community, presence means being attuned to the needs and hopes of those within and beyond our walls. How can we be a presence of support for those who find this season difficult? How can we be present to the joy and the sorrow that coexist in our midst, holding space for both?

This December, may we practice the art of presence—being fully here, fully aware, and fully compassionate with ourselves and each other. In doing so, we create space for true connection, healing, and peace.

Blessings on your journey through this season of presence.

Rev. Michelle
